Waiting on a decision is the hardest part of a VA claim. Our accredited officers explain what actually moves a file forward, and what quietly stalls one.
The most common question at our benefits clinic is some version of "why is this taking so long?" The honest answer is that most delays trace back to evidence rather than queue position, and evidence is the part you and your service officer can still influence after a claim is filed.
Three things reliably stall a file. Missing private medical records, because the VA will request them but will not chase them indefinitely. A missed examination appointment, which can close a claim outright. And a nexus that is implied rather than stated, where the record shows a condition but nothing connects it to service.
Three things reliably help. Submitting private records yourself rather than waiting on a release. Keeping a symptom log with dates, because a reviewer can read a log far faster than a stack of visit notes. And answering VA correspondence inside the stated window even when the answer is "I am still gathering that."
If your claim has been pending longer than the current average for its type, bring the correspondence to a clinic. An accredited officer can read the file status, tell you which of the above applies, and file a Higher-Level Review if a decision came back wrong. There is no charge for any of it, and you never pay a percentage of an award to anyone at Freedom Ridge.
Freedom Ridge VRC is a fictional demonstration organization. This story, its author, and everyone in it are invented.
